House of Azimuth

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
— Hellen Keller

Julie Marie Renard

started her career as an educator, specializing in the creation of framework for young children struggling to move through uncertain worlds. This work requires a foundation of extreme intention. It is one where every decision is concerned how the events of this single moment will manifest itself decades down the line. Her focus is to push towards the exploration of uncomfortable truths and unbiased understanding, finding control over the self and compassion with others.

With this foundation in mind, her work as an artist is the result of her own uncomfortable truths. Working in processes that always end in the destruction of the initial idea. Each piece is an exploration of the subjective nature of reality. Trying to understand that a current state is a culmination of hard work, thought, and skill, but also random chance, the fallible nature of memory, and the ease of which our cognizance can be manipulated by both the self and others.

Her goals do not to seek an authentic fruition of the artistic idea, one that is “truest”, free of mannerisms, and ultimately narcissistic.  Instead she seeks sincerity, an honest manifestation of the attempt, failure, and resilience of lived experience.

Born in Los Angeles, Ca Julie Marie has never found herself far from the ocean. Studying in the redwoods of California she learned to get lost in the fog of black sand beaches and on Oahu, she learned to love the cradle of the waves. She loves exploring hidden and forgotten places, whether in the hidden corners of that abandoned foundry in West Oakland or backpacking along in the Pacific North West.  She is inspired by the stories that lay around the next corner and wondering why people ever stop asking "why" when they grow up.

J.M. believes in kindness, mischief, and resilience. Her designs are the result of her idiosyncrasy and the fragile beauty of our own humanness.

She currently resides on the North side of the Golden Gate Bridge, in Sausalito, Ca and works at The Revere Academy of Jewelry Arts and is an amateur locksmith.

What is The House of Azimuth ?

'Azimuth' is the direction of a celestial object from the observer, expressed as the angular distance from the north or south point of the horizon to the point at which a vertical circle passing through the object intersects the horizon. It is a guide and the direction which we choose to chart our lives by. The House of Azimuth participates in immersive art campaigns centered around delivered mail and audio recordings in the San Francisco Bay Area.
